Previous heating oil consumption before the switch
Out with the oil-fired heating system, in with the CUBIC Heat Pump.
Geothermal Heat and Propane Instead of Heating Oil

In Scharnitz, an oil-fired heating system was replaced with the stackable OVUM CUBIC Heat Pump, which combines geothermal energy with modern propane gas technology—including gentle cooling via the existing underfloor heating system and integration with the existing photovoltaic system.
Installed by MECO.
From Oil Heating to the CUBIC Heat Pump
Previously, an oil-fired heating system that consumed about 2,000 liters of heating oil per year met the building’s heating needs. As part of the conversion, the plant was completely upgraded to a Heat Pump solution: CUBIC by OVUM, a stackable Heat Pump that combines geothermal energy with modern propane gas technology. The existing underfloor heating system also allows for gentle cooling.
Financial benefit compared to the previous oil-fired heating system in this project
Figures provided by the partner company for this specific project, rounded and calculated based on historical heating oil consumption. This is a one-time case: Actual savings in another building depend, among other factors, on heating requirements, energy prices, and usage patterns, and are determined on a case-by-case basis.
An Overview of the Components
CUBIC Heat Pump
A stackable Heat Pump that combines geothermal energy with propane, a natural refrigerant.
Gentle Cooling
Using the existing floor heating system for gentle cooling in the summer.
PV Integration
Connection to the existing photovoltaic system; excess electricity is fed into the grid.

Scope of Work for the Transition
From the removal of the old heating system to the installation of a fully operational Heat Pump, the project in Scharnitz was supervised from start to finish:
- Removal of the old oil-fired heating system and the oil tank
- Excavation work for the new plant
- Deep Drilling and Core Drilling for Geothermal Energy
- Electrical Work
- Complete installation of the new CUBIC Heat Pump, including PV integration
Why switch from oil to a Heat Pump?
Switching from oil heating to a Heat Pump reduces dependence on fossil fuels and fluctuating oil prices and lowers the heating system’s CO₂ emissions. When combined with a photovoltaic system, self-generated electricity can also be used for heating.
Implemented by an OVUM partner company
Dismantling, excavation and drilling work, electrical work, and the complete installation of the new Plant were all handled through a single point of contact.
Implementing Partner: MECO oversaw the project from start to finish—from the dismantling of the old system to the handover. Additional projects and contact information: www.meco.at.
